Meet Ann Speltz, BoxcarPR’s “Crackerjack.”

The Speltz family (minus Ann’s brothers). We’ve welcomed a new baby (the first) to the fam, Joseph Edward was born a day before my birthday in January. He’s the reason I make it to Cinci quite a bit. #1 Aunt!

crack·er·jack [krak-er-jak]

noun

1. a person or thing that shows marked ability or excellence.

Last May, Ann joined BoxcarPR as a Minion (our friendly term for Intern) but we are excited to welcome her as a full-time member of our graphics department! Ann first moved to the great Commonwealth of Kentucky to fulfill an internship at Louisville Visual Art Association. She is responsible for some of the great design work we supply our clients.

So as a Minnesota native, what do you think about the hot, hot heat of this Kentucky summer?

It’s hot. The humidity is craziness. Air conditioning is my best friend. I’m looking forward to what fall and winter bring…

Let’s get the basics out of the way…

Educational background?

I graduated from University of St. Thomas, a small private Catholic liberal arts university in St. Paul, MN that is similar to Bellarmine. My classes for my major field of study were taken at sister school, St. Catherine University (St. Kate’s). St. Kate’s is the largest university for women in the US.

Favorite pet growing up?

I’ve always been a dog lover. My family had a Cockapoo named Chopper and today we have a Chocolate Lab named Riley. Riley brought out the youthfulness of Chopper in her later days.

Favorite candy?

When I think candy, I go gummy. Huge fan of gummy worms, sour patch kids, swedish fish, orange slices –Don’t get me wrong, I’m a chocoholic too.

Favorite Summer Olympic sport?

I’m an Olympic superfan, I’ve definitely dedicated a lot of time to the London Olympics. Track and field, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics…incredible! All the athletes are seriously insane.

This is a standard question we ask people from Minnesota–Have you ever participated in curling?

I haven’t. I know there are curling clubs in Minnesota but I guess I haven’t been lucky enough to come across one.

What was the best concert you’ve ever attended?

I recently saw FUN and it was a blast. The entire band rocked out, it was awesome: small venue, great concert. I’m a big supporter of outdoor concert festivals–Lollapalooza, Rock the Gardens, WeFest are amazing.

What kind of projects do you LOVE working on?

Creative, colorful, challenging. Anything where I can turn concepts into visuals- that look great.

You began as a Minion, and we’re so excited to have you joining Boxcar as our full-time CrackerJack! Why do you enjoy working here?

You guys! I love the fast-paced environment from the mix of client work that present a constant challenge. We are small but our specialties jive to create this superior team. I get excited thinking about where we’ll take Boxcar this next year.

When you’re not working, what can we find you doing?

Adjusting to life in the South. I’m new to Lou, there’s a lot I have yet to experience. I’m kind of a foodie, so I’ve been trying to make my rounds to the hotspots in Louisville. My sister lives in Cincinnati, one of my brothers in Chicago, and the remaining family in Minnesota—I travel a bit. I’m still looking for a soccer team to join… hint hint!
